Rhythm
Study 1 Acrylic, wood and cloth on 3 linen canvasas $700.00 The sinuous outline and shapes of the logs and board on the left are repeated in the painted shapes and the curved canvas as seen on the right. 24" x 44" 2007 This painting is composed of groups of threes with three raw linen canvases along with the painted and assembled shapes. The artist conceived the rhythm to flow from left to right. As in many of the wood assemblages, cut and split logs are juxtaposed with found pieces of natural wood and old wood that was planed and once painted. Painted acrylic shapes repeat the colors of the natural and stressed old wood. This is a study of color advancement or recession. The two pink shapes on the left are collage and actually are on top (or in front) of the other two. It's a question whether the green leaf-like shapes float on top of the pink shapes or are cutouts in the pink exposing the green behind. The green shape on the far left is obviously cut out because of the shadows. Three verticals that repeat the same color change places in either warm rectangles or a more open cool space. They create a visual rhythm. LEN GERWICK PAINTINGS The artist Leonard Gerwick has used his skills in a most profound way, since the mid 1960's. ABSTRACT RHYTHM PAINTINGS 3D Len Gerwick's abstract rhythm paintings are fine art that seek a specific goal which is a beautiful visual order seen in repeated and related forms. This is a fine art that is akin to music and architecture that can be two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Sometimes the 3D is paper collage, other times it is the assemblage of found objects. Various kinds of paper, cloth and wood are used; planed wood, old stressed and painted wood, natural tree limbs and bark are also employed. In these paintings, acrylic is the paint medium often applied directly onto unprimed natural linen. Earth tones predominate although all colors are engaged. The colorful paintings are as much a part of the rhythm as the repetition of shape and form which is often inspired by the subtle and sometimes somber tones of New England. Len creates these rhythm abstractions in his studio in Massachusetts. This art work is suitable for the business and corporate environment as well as the private home.
