1997. In 1997 I drew sketches for a twelve canvas ensemble inspired by the ballet music from the opera Faust by Charles Gounod (1818-1893). This painting is the first dance of the ballet. It reads left to right and from the upper left down. I was meticulous in painting every sound I heard (I’m using the word sound to mean a combination of notes heard together). When there was a combination of sounds, sort of a counterpoint, I put two shapes together. An example would be the little yellow squiggles that are accompanied by an orange ellipse behind and partially covered. The painting was extremely painstaking and in retrospect tight. Acrylic on cotton, 16X72 inches, $500.00. Click painting to enlarge.
